The Music Industry struggles with noise pollution, waste and other concerns.. If you have ever been to a live concert before, you will notice that after the event has ended, the floor is blanketed with confetti, streamers, cans, and other pieces of rubbish. Many music artists are trying to promote sustainability, and weave in environmentally friendly elements into their performances, for example, making merchandise more sustainable by making it out of recycled cotton.
What Are Eco-Friendly Music Venues?
Eco-Friendly music venues are areas designed to enhance sustainability and to lessen negative environmental impact, i.e. rubbish. The aim is to reduce the carbon footprint by using sustainable materials and reducing waste. As well as this being good for the environment, it also improves the audience's experience, because after all, I don't think any of us want to be wading around in cans and bottles and dirty plastic after a concert.
Common features include:
Solar Energy-concerts include masses of light and energy, which burns a lot of fossil fuels, so the use of solar energy has been included to reduce this from happening.
Regular Recycling Stations-bigger bins which have dedicated uses (e.g. a bin for plastic, a bin for food waste, etc.) have been installed to minimise the amount of rubbish.
Water Refill Areas-to minimise the use of single-use plastic bottles, water refill stations are now being more frequently used.
Mad Music Facts About Unsustainable Concerts-
Here are some statistics to really scare you!
US, 2019, festivals produced 53,000 tons of waste
52% US attend a music festival each year, the majority all offer single use plastic bottles.
Coachella (a massive, popular festival), contributes to 107 tons of waste, and only 20% of it is recycled.
Benefits of Eco-Friendly Venues
Better audience engagement:
The audience can feel like they are in a cleaner area, and can feel positive knowing that they are having fun at a concert, without the worry of them making a mess or harming the environment.
Reduced costs:
Sadly when I say "reduced costs" I don't mean for the audience, but the lighting bills decrease drastically by using LED lights.
Positive Outlook On The Artist:
The audience may seem to enjoy and respect the artist more at an eco friendly concert, knowing that the artist is trying to make the concert sustainable for a worthwhile cause. This can created a positive atmosphere between the crowd and artist, and also entice bigger crowds.
