When you look in your wardrobe or drawers, what do you see? Clothes, right? Especially for any of the younger audiences watching the website, such as teenagers and young adults, fashion is probably at the heart of your favourite things. However, as much as we all love going on shopping sprees and finding soft new clean clothes, not all fabric is healthy for the environment, and that is where the rising problem of "Fast Fashion" comes into place.
What is "Fast Fashion"?
Fast fashion is a relatively new issue. It is when low priced but popular clothing that moves quickly to other retail shops, match things such as trends. If you are a big social media fan, then you will probably know what a trend is.
In short terms, a trend is something that suddenly becomes popular for a period of time. Sometimes a trend can last for a long time, but other times it comes in a big blast, and a couple of days later, the millions of customers think the product is uncool and becomes unpopular, so it is no longer a trend.
What is the problem with Fast Fashion? Due to the fact that Fast Fashion is linked to trends, which don't last long, all the millions of people who have bought the product, simply throw it away, causing tons of fabric to go into landfill which can be harmful to the environment. And when the trend is finished, all of the unsold products also gets thrown into landfill. This increases the sizes of our landfills, and also increases the amount of dead animals, because many animals such as birds, gather around landfills, to eat the scraps, and if they try eating long bits of cloth and clothing, then that could easily get trapped in their stomach if they are unable to digest it properly.
Is there a solution?
Yes! There are solutions and you can join in with helping too!
Now, I am aware, that fashion is key in everybody's lives, and that it's exciting when you buy some new clothes, and try a new style. So the solution isn't to just, not buy any clothes and keep the ones you have for the rest of your lives. No.
Here are some ways you could help:
When you are having a sort out of all of your old clothes, instead of throwing away the ones you don't like or don't fit you, give them to a charity shop instead, where the clothes will be sent to poorer people, who cannot afford clothes.
Think to yourself next time you're about to go on a shopping spree: Do I really need new clothes, or am I doing it for the sake of it?
When you are at your next shopping spree, and you are about to buy some clothes, make sure you try them on in the changing rooms first, to double check you definitely like them. And if you go home, and you forgot to try them on at the changing room, and you go home and you realise they don't fit you and you don't like the product, then obviously, send the clothes back, but what if you can't get a refund? Then go back to tip number one, and give it to charity.
