Today is World Otter Day-which occurs on the last Wednesday in May! Let's learn about what these creatures are, fun facts about them, and more!
What Are Otters?
Otters are semiaquatic mammals. This means that they spend both their time in the water, and out of the water! They have sleek fur and webbed feet, which help them when swimming.
Otter Species: There are 13 different species of otters, including the sea otter, river otter, and giant otter.
Diet: Otters are carnivores and feed on a variety of prey such as fish, crabs, and shellfish.
Tool Users: Otters like to eat shellfish, and they can be tough to open, so otters use different "tools" like rocks, to open the shellfish, and eat the meat inside.
Social Creatures: Otters are known for their social behaviour, and often live in groups called rafts.
Lifespan: Otters usually live up to around 10-15 years.
Are Otters Endangered?
Otters are indeed endangered, they are in the red zone for the endangered animal list. Humans are the main threat towards otters-through shooting, fishing gear entanglements, but oil spills and sea pollution are also major threats.
Celebrating World Otter Day
World Otter Day is a time to raise awareness about these incredible creatures and the importance of protecting their habitats. There are things you can do to help! If you want to get involved with World Otter Day, then why not spread awareness, or donate to charities, and always be cautious about the animals around you. Wildlife may be amazing, but just make sure to only look at the wildlife, and not to pet it or interfere too much, because human disruption is one causes for animal loss and endangered species.
